Mr. Ernest Walter McKinnon of Streamwood

Ernest Walter McKinnon, 89, of Streamwood formerly of Lockport, Illinois. Loving husband of the late Joyce McKinnon; beloved father of Diane (Peter Bischoff) McKinnon, Michael (Camille Ellsworth) McKinnon, Jennifer Harkin, Tina (Jeffrey) Schultz and the late Joyce Shelfo; cherished grandfather of 10 and great grandfather of many; devoted brother of Gregory McKinnon, the late Vernon McKinnon and the late Gordon McKinnon; dear uncle of many nieces and nephews. Dad was a graduate of Farragut High School, on the west side of Chicago. During his junior and senior years he was involved in cross country running competitions. He remained physically active throughout his entire life, swimming and cycling were two of his favourite activities. Dad spent two years in the army, where as a highly skilled mechanic he worked on and maintained the Army’s military equipment. Dad also love the outdoors, nature and gardening. He would spend many hours in the backyard of his beloved Lockport home where he created an arbor of fruit trees, planted lush fern gardens and tended his vegetable garden, he sure did love his tomato plants. Throughout most of his life he was very involved in the Illinois High School Association as a swimming and diving official, receiving an award at the end of his tenure for dedication and service. This was one of his many legacy’s. He also volunteered as a scuba diving instructor at the Downers Grove, YMCA. He was passionate about scuba diving and would take his two oldest children Mike and Diane on many scuba diving adventures. Dad was loved by all who came to know him. His gentle, kind and very loving spirit will be sadly missed. Family and Friends will meet Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 12 Noon until time of military funeral service 3:00 P.M. at Morizzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2550 West Hassell Road, (Northeast corner at Barrington Road), Hoffman Estates, Illinois 60169 for memorial visitation. Donations in his memory can be made to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Association or the Lung Association.
