Mrs. Joanne Marie Smith of Hoffman Estates

Joanne Marie Smith, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois. With her loving children by her side, Joanne Marie Smith, 86, joined her Lord Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. She was born Joanne Marie Laird in Kankakee, Illinois on August 16, 1928 to Kathryn (Katie) and Paul Laird. Joanne’s formative education was at the Kankakee public schools and Emma Willard School for Girls in Troy, New York. Joanne attended Northwestern University and Katharine Gibbs College. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority and the Eli Skinner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Joanne married Richard (Dick) Smith on August 25, 1951 at Cobb Park in Kankakee. Joanne and Richard were happily married for thirty-six years until Richard’s death on April 21st, 1989. Joanne lived most of her married life in rural Manteno, happily raising her six children. Though an accomplished artist and musician, Joanne’s pride and joy was her family as she was at her happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Joanne was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wilton Center where she spent many years teaching Catechism and serving on the Altar and Rosary Society. In addition to her husband, Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Paula (Jed) Mark, and her daughter, Kathryn Matkov. She is survived by five of her children: Patrick (Kathleen) Smith of Oak Forest, Daniel (Marie) Smith of Frankfort, Terrence (Donna) Smith of Oak Park, Michelle (Gary) Pilafas of Hoffman Estates, Erin (James) Stegall of Macomb and son-in-law, George (Nancy) Matkov of Chicago. Joanne is also survived by her grandchildren: Megan Smith, Andrew Smith, Taylor Smith, Spencer Smith, Danielle Smith, Jacqueline Smith, Erik Smith, Austin Pilafas, Joshua Pilafas, Jonathan Pilafas, Caleb Pilafas and Evan Stegall. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Manteno, Illinois followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral Mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery followed by a late funeral luncheon for close friends and family.
