Mr. Gang Sun of Hoffman Estates
August 19, 1953 - April 22, 2022
Gang Sun, 68, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Gang Sun, a loving husband, father, and friend to many passed away on April 22, 2022; his heart full of gratitude for all those who accompanied him throughout his sixty-eight year journey. Gang was born in Beijing, China on August 19, 1953 to the esteemed Dr. Heling Sun and Tieling Wu. He was raised in the historical hutongs of Beijing’s Dongcheng district. In the 1960s and 70s, during a period of tumultuous social and political change, millions of young Chinese were sent to the countryside to "undergo re-education” as part of the Cultural Revolution. Gang was first sent to Heilongjiang to be a farmer and then to Gansu to be a factory worker. A lifelong learner, Gang was a member of the “Class of ‘77”, the first group of Chinese students to attend college following the reinstatement of China’s college entrance exam after a decade-long suspension. Out of 5.7 million students who sat for the exam, he was one of 273,000 to secure a spot. He enrolled in Northeastern University in Shengyang where he studied automation engineering and met his classmate and future wife, Lihua Zhao. Upon graduation, Gang returned to Beijing and began his career in China’s automation industry. There, in 1984, Lihua gave birth to their beloved daughter, Peijing Sun. Aspiring for a better life, Gang and Lihua emigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1990 where he earned a master’s degree in telecommunications at DePaul University on a full scholarship for which he was deeply grateful. He spent the next 30 years working as a network engineer across a number of Chicagoland companies including Motorola, Cisco, IBM, and TD Bank until his retirement in 2018. Throughout his career, he was known for his professionalism, dependability, and conscientiousness. During his retirement, Gang pursued his many interests and hobbies including traveling, writing, reading, and socializing with friends. As a life-long collector and lover of antiques, Gang especially appreciated Chinese embroidery and calligraphy and often went off the beaten path to visit collections and galleries across the world. Gang will be remembered by his friends and loved ones for his generosity, willingness to help others, open-mindedness, and always being receptive to different people and experiences.
