Mr. Richard L. Schmid of Hoffman Estates

Richard "Dick" L. Schmid, age 83, of Hoffman Estates, passed away on April 23, 2026. He was born on May 26, 1942, to Henry and Virginia Schmid in Chicago, IL. Richard grew up with his parents and sisters Jacki and Lynn in Chicago. While growing up he enjoyed riding his bicycle to the lakefront, spending time during the summer at his grandparents’ house in Antioch and visiting his uncle at the firehouse. On November 16, 1963, he married Karen Lachner, the love of his life. A year later they bought their home in Hoffman Estates and built their lives in this community. They had two daughters, Cheri and Cyndi. He always supported Karen’s volunteer activities at the schools and at the church. Dick had a boat on the Fox River which allowed him to go fishing with his family and good friends from high school. He always loved to sing, “On the Road Again” on his many trips down Interstate 57 to the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University. While he enjoyed being the father of daughters, he was extremely excited when his sons-in-law joined the family. Dick was a dedicated letter carrier in Niles and Hoffman Estates for 43 years. He was proud of his years in public service and cared about his postal patrons. He also cherished his friendships with many of his co-workers, which continued into retirement. After retiring, Dick and Karen traveled together across the country. He was always pleasantly surprised how much he would like unfamiliar places. The best part of the trips for him was when he would come home and tell stories to others about these trips. His absolute favorite vacations were to Disney World. They took many trips to Disney, and he treasured every single one. While on their trips to Florida, they also visited with family and friends. Dick was an avid dog lover; they were an important part of his life. Whether they were his own, his grand- dogs, his neighbors, or on his mail route, they were an important part of his life. Dick will be deeply missed by his beloved family and devoted friends and neighbors. His kindness, sense of responsibility to others and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 28th , 2026 from 3:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Morizzo Funeral Home, 2550 Hassell Road, Hoffman Estates, IL. Family and friends will meet on Wednesday, April 29th , 2026 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Hubert Church, 729 Grand Canyon, Hoffman Estates, Illinois 60169.
